William Child

Photographer
Studio(s): Leeds
14 & 15 Wellington Street; Leeds
English.
William Child was a Victorian professional photographer who worked in Leeds and subsequently established a long-running photographic business in the town. In July 1856, he entered into partnership with Edmund Wormald, opening the Gallery of Art at 13 Great George Street, Leeds. Their studio produced portraits as well as architectural and topographical photographs.

The partnership's most notable commission was a series of photographs of Leeds Town Hall, presented to Queen Victoria by the architect Cuthbert Brodrick during the building's opening in 1858. The partnership ended in November 1859, after which Child moved to Wellington Street, Leeds, where he continued working independently for many years.

Child's career extended into the early twentieth century. The National Portrait Gallery records him as active between 1861 and 1902, and holds a cabinet-card portrait of the politician John Bright dating from the 1880s.
